We do weekly fulls retained for 5 weeks and daily level1's retained for
8 days. We do approximately 1300 backups daily.

One thing you could consider is switching to the 3 month retention
period for daily backups, but perform a single monthly backup with a
retention
period of 1 year. That might be a happy medium.
