Yes you can do it, just make sure you have this in bp.conf:-
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER =3D from_host to_host
where from_host is the original name and to_host is the new name.

Worked for me anyway :)

Don't do it!!!! Not if you intend on being able to restore images backed up=
 using the old hostname. Although, yes, you would have to reconfigure each=
 client to point to your new master server, but that's the least of it. The=
 real problem is that the hostname of the master server is deeply embedded =
in=20
your database catalogs.=20
