I've done numerous single-file restorations where multiple tapes were
identified in the logs but only one tape was read for restore. When the
bprestore kicks off, it'll say something like:

  Restore started Wed Jul 03 15:41:51 2002
15:42:32 (201521.xxx) Restore job id 201521 will require 3 images.
15:42:32 (201521.xxx) Media id 000048 is needed for the restore.
15:42:33 (201521.xxx) Media id 000165 is needed for the restore.
15:42:33 (201521.xxx) Media id 000141 is needed for the restore.

It seems to identify all tapes that contain the image. If the requested
file restored early in the process, though, like tape 000048 above, then
it'll never mount the remaining tapes. So, I'm guessing that if the image
listing exists in your db, you could get away with it. If the image is
expired and importing is necessary then I really don't know a solution for a
missing tape.

Is there any way to recover a partial image from a tape? The image spanned
two tapes, the second of which has been overwritten. I've tried importing
the first tape, but it's 'partially successful' with an unexpected EOF
error. I just need one file from that backup!

This is on Windows 2000 Advanced Server, using NetBackup 3.4 patched to
341_2.

Thanks!
