That was it.  

Somebody in "tightening" the box commented the "bprd" from the /etc/services
and the client couldn't lookup the portname.  Thanks!

Is it resolving the port name?

I'd turn on the bprd log (for giggles), and then 'telnet master bprd' on
the client.
