Thank you all for your help. All tests seem to not be any problem, but from
talking to my network guys the set up I have has become clear.

for simplicity 1 machine has gigabit Ethernet and is in the same VLAN as my
backup server, and is backing up about 14 gig /hour, which is good. The
other machines however are on a separate VLAN behind some routers etc. None
of the other machines have gigabit Ethernet.

Although even over 100mbit connection they should still be backing up faster
than 1 or 2 gig an hour, the amount of data is small and so it is dealt with
in the backup window.

The problem with this machine I started the thread with was that it was
backing up 14 gig and taking 7 - 8 hours. This was unacceptable and so I
though there was a problem.

After testing this client on its own and then testing other clients ( not
the machine with gigabit ) I found them all to be doing the same sort of
speed, about 1-2 gig an hour.

I conclude that it is a network issue, but is down to the design of the
infrastructure. The design architect has told me that there should not
really be 14 gig of info on the machine taking long to backup and it should
be more like 2 gig. This would then be manageable.

Thanks for all your help, but I think its just one of those things out of my
control.

I will finish with a question though.

I have 2 classes, or 2 schedules for example both wanting to backup the same
client. One is doing an incremental backup and the other is doing a full
backup of the same directories for disaster recovery purposes. I am noticing
though that this second schedule does not start until the first 1 has
finished. Is this right? and is there any way to make 2 different schedules
from 2 different classes backup the same client simultaneously?

cheers
Dave

Easiest way is to look at the left front of the drive. The second
light up from the bottom is for compression.

You turn it on or off by which device file you use, and also probably
depends on having the correct st.conf entry. Short answer, if you're
using a "c" in your device name you're attempting to use compression.
For a longer answer, man st.

I wouldn't, unless you're on a T1 or something.

Can't really say, too many variables. In your email, you mention
another client doing 14GB/hr, which is acceptable but not great for
DLT7000 and 100Mb.
