Is there a mail_bp_reports script under usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies on
netops. If you see it there, can you forward it to me?

Thanks,

Fred

Any idea why Netbackup reports 105 Gigs on one tape
for a Netbackup for Oracle Class. Even though the
tapes have a maximum capacity of 40/80 Gigs.

Ahh.. that's it.

I looked at the '-U' flag every time I read the man page, but I must
have just glossed over the meaning. That's what I was missing.

Thanks.

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies is your friend. Check out mail_bp_reports.
We have it as a cron job and it told it who send the reports to.

Compression.

Particularly if you're backing up database files (or other sparse files).
Have you ever
ran compress(1) on an Oracle .dbf file? Particularly one that has been
pre-extended
and is mostly empty? Compresses better than raw ASCII text.

I managed to get myself through the patch process, yet the
final update of the Java gui's for clients seems to not be
working:

bash-2.03# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/update_clients -Install_Java

Installing NetBackup-Java GUI applications to NetBackup-Java supported
clients.

There are no clients to upgrade.

Eh? I believe all my clients have the correct entry in their
inetd.conf for the bpjava junk - what logic is the update_clients
program using?

80 is an assumed capacity given 2:1 average compression. The better the
compression, the more the tape will hold.

Nevermind - my text parsing skills tend to skip things in ( )
as they're optional, right? Heh. From the README:

(for a Solaris, HP-UX or Linux NetBackup media server, do step 1 only)

Thank you everyone for your help. I took the information below to disable
vopie. In addition, we had to perform one more step so the following is
everything that was performed.

1. mv /usr/openv/var/auth /usr/openv/var/auth.sav
2. mkdir /usr/openv/lib/save
3. mv /usr/openv/lib/lib* /usr/openv/lib/save
4. change permissions on /usr/openv/var (the original permissions are
drwxr-x--- /usr/openv/var)
add r-x to world so it looks like drwxr-xr-x /usr/openv/var

This seem to work, so no authentication is being performed and nonroot users
can perform a backup.
This was done on the master server and all media servers and will probably
be done on clients if issues arise.

Terry,

We ran into authorization problems too - even with "noauth". What we have
done, by reccomendation of Veritas, is:
mv /usr/openv/var/auth /usr/openv/var/auth.sav
mkdir /usr/openv/lib/save
mv /usr/openv/lib/lib* /usr/openv/lib/save

If you do that on master and media servers it will effectively disable all
authorization. Also note that it seems that every time you patch the system
those files will be re-created.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Classes don't start

We are running NetBackup BusinesServer 3.4 (patched to 3.4.1GA) on Windows
NT. The one server takes care of all NetBackup services and has drives
directly attached, and the only client being backed up is a Win2K Server
file share.

I have recently combined several classes into one. The only difference
between original 4 daily classes was the schedule. The new unified class
has schedules for MON, TUE, WED, THU, with appropriate media pools defined
(overridden).

This worked fine for about a week. Now the class will not run at all
automatically. There is no entry in the status window, and I don't see much
in the reports, except this:

2002/04/19 00:49:30 okboneyard bpexpdate Error
Could not update media list, file read failed

The class should have started at 00:00:00, so I'm not sure this error is
related.

Right now, I would like any hints for where to look for more information, or
any potential gotchas with the multi-schedule class. FWIW, a manual launch
of the class works just fine.
