All the suggestions that use bpdbjobs as the source of information are
overlooking the fact that Gary wants to see Drive utilization and guess
what, bpdbjobs doesn't carry that piece of information! The other things
you cannot get from bpdbjobs is knowledge about tape/drive throughput on
jobs that span multiple tapes. All you get is aggregate data that tells you
how many kb were written on behalf of the job and how long each tape was
mounted. In our environment we regularly write 380+ Gb jobs to DLT, causing
us to use 3-4 tapes. Sometimes one of those combinations performs poorly
but there is no way of knowing which one that was.

Hence, although I look at bpdbjobs output, to get a rough sense of what is
going on, the beef itself has to be retrieved from the MediaManagers' bptm
logs. Those will tell you in great detail (although sometimes still not
enough :-) how drives and tapes behaved.

Since many folks seem to be needing this kind of data I will make my PERL
code to analyze this data available sometime over the weekend. Anyone who
wants to be an early adopter and cannot wait until Monday, let me know and I
will send you an early tar-ball tonight when I get home:

Here is some sample output from a typical day's run of one of our larger
backup jobs highlighting the kind of problems bpdbjobs just doesn't help you
with. Look at job stream 32050. It wrote a total of 342Gb just like the
other streams for the NBUPR2 class but it ran for 26 hours as opposed to the
more typical 12. The culprit turns out to be the 16 hours volume S02442
spent in drive 16, crawling along at a measly 1Mb/sec. (This output was
generated using a script called "joblog.pl")
