I had questions about volume pools and groups until I figured out a theory
on Monday. As a simple example, some shops use seperate volume pools for
Unix and NT. They might not want to mix the different file systems on the
same tape.

The help file for Volume Pools says: "A volume pool identifies a set of
volumes by usage." In your class configuration, you can force each class to
seek a tape from a specific pool, ie, Unix_Pool or NT_Pool. You can also
direct duplicates of previous jobs to an "offsite_duplicate" pool.

It goes on to talk about Volume Groups: "Volume groups are also useful for
tracking location, such as when volumes are moved offsite." You could create
an "Offsite_Storage" Volume group to hold the media ids from both Unix_Pools
and NT_Pool as you box tapes up and ship them to a temporary offsite storage
site. I believe in the above example, you could also create a
"Permanent_Storage" Volume Group to hold once a year tapes from both the
Unix_Pool and the NT_Pool. I believe the Volume Groups concept is more
housekeeping than anything else.

I'd like to ask the list about any references, pointers, or links to
material that talks about offsite storage. I'm trying to get a handle on
the appropriate usage of volume groups, pools, offsite methodology. Thanks
for any info you may be able to provide.

Also in conjunction with this, I'd like to ask a couple of specific
questions.

1. What method are people using to ensure duplicate tapes are filled, or
rather, have a status of "FULL"

2. Is the "offsite" option to vmchange explained in detail anywhere else
but in the "Media Manager's Sysadmin Guide?
