Hi Bob,
In addition to Karen's suggestions. You can backup
to a Gigabit Ethernet connected tape library as
outlined at:
http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/config_gbe.html
This essentially performs a 3-way backup, but
instead of the target being a filer with a
tape device its the tape library (running NDMP)
itself.

At less one tape drive must be attached to a NetApp box. Your other NetApp
boxes can run 3-way backups to this NetApp box which has the tape drive.
