Speaking from a great deal of recent experience moving hardware platfroms on
the NT4 OS is very difficult. It can be done if you take the nic and scsi
controller from the new platform, install them in the old hardware, get the
drivers loaded correctly then do a backup, then move the hardware back and
do your restore. That will work....sometimes.

W2K on the other hand is very forgiving of hardware changes. The only real
trick is the disk system. If the controller is radicaly different you will
need to load the drivers up on the old system first (ie, install the
controller and let w2k find and load it.) If the controllers are similar it
is very easy. In our case we went from a megaraid controller in a unisys box
to an HP netraid on an HP server(same board basicaly). After the restore and
reboot w2k caught all the new stuff, asked for the correct drivers and away
we went.

Haven't done this myself. Your email did not mention what OS but have you
taken a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q287061 or more
specifically "How to Restore a Backup to Computer with Different Hardware
(Q139822)" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q139822?

Ken

I'm guessing this is NT or 2000, and in that case you may not have much luck
at all. With NT at least, I know it is very sensitive to changes in
hardware. A different machine entirely with different SCSI/RAID/etc... was
always more than a little catastrophic for it. I'm not sure about 2000 and
how it reacts when the world changes.
