We have done a number of bare metal restores with both NT and W2K servers.
We use NBU 3.4.1 on a W2K master/media server, STK L700 with STK 9840
drives. I have never had any major problems. I don't know if in your case
you can use IDR's or not, but if you can it is the only way to go, takes all
the thinking out of the process. We have also done it without IDR's and been
successful. I'm not sure why they would be having a problem unless they are
trying to change some major piece of hardware along with the restore (which
apparently is not the case). Changing NIC's and disk controllers are
notorious in NT4 for causing problems. Converesly, W2K is absolutely
marvelous at handling hardware differences (hint, hint). The only problem
with W2K was with Domain Controllers and that problem seems to have been
resolved with SP2. It was iffy with SP1 but I have not had a problem since
sp2 came out.

I have an issue regarding recovery of a complete NT system with NetBackup.

We have a large number of NT systems. Occasionally, through bad hardware or
software, one dies horribly.

The NT guys install NT onto a new system (identical hardware) system,
install the NetBackup client, and do a full system restore. I have just been
told by our NT guys that, when they have to recover such a system, they
cannot just do a whole system restore. If they try, NT complains about the
kernel not being found. They end up having to do a selective restore and
repair. This defeats some of the purpose of have a full system backup.

Surely someone has had to do a complete system recovery, and had it function
correctly. How is it done? Would we have a similar problem on Solaris
systems?

Thanks

Jason
