BlankYou need to restore in the same manner as you back'ed up the
data...unless you do the following:

You would be much better off backing up to disk, then immediately
duplicating that/those images to tape.  After that I would change the
primary copy number to 2 (the tape library copy), then when the disk STU
backup image gets destroyed (by you expiring the image), you still have a
copy you can browse for restores in your tape library.  That now will be the
primary copy for all restores.  Furthermore, after the disk stu copy has
been expired, you can then schedule a duplication session to send those
tapes offsite for DR purposes.

What's the application here for staging to disk first, performance?

Catalog issues?  Well, I can't think of any stingers that would really hurt
you.  I would just say plan with much consideration for  your restoration
plan.
