I am not sure if or how you could do it with RMAN without the backup agent
for Oracle. But if you are wanting to do a cold backup of the database,
you can create UNIX scripts to shutdown the database before the backup and
start it up after the backup. I do this with 2 of the databases I am
responsible for every weekend. I run the shutdown scripts from the
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpstart_notify script and the startup processes
from the /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpend_notify script. During the week, I
export the
databases to disk and back up the export. I did something simular to this
for doing cold backups using ADSM at a previous job.

If you would be intreste in seeing the scripts. I can email copies to you.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Oracle and begin/end scripts

Does anyone have any sample begin and end scripts for Oracle backup jobs?
I've scoured the web for them. I have machines using RMAN as well as the
regular nbu client. The jobs are currently kicked off on the client side
with cron to run a bp to a user backup class. I have asked my DBA to write
begin and end scripts so that I can schedule the backups through Netbackup.
His response is that it cannot be done. I'd rather not go through the
trouble of learning the oracle stuff, just to prove him wrong. Any
suggestions?

Bill
