Its highly likely the directory on the DLT tape is corrupt
therefore a locate will result in sequential read.
I am assuming DLT as its a common problem with DLT's.

There are tools you can use to check and re-create the directory.
See www.dlttools.com

To All
We are seeing some very strange behavior with our STK9710 (6drives) attached
to a Sun E-450 running
NB3.4 during backup of our Exchange class. The tape in mounted in the drive
and it takes sometimes up
to 1hr 50 minutes to begin writing, were seeing position times on our
backups up to this amount. I was
wondering if anyone has ever seen this before ? Help
