We are running Netbackup v3.4 on a Sun E420 with solaris 2.6 and an L180
with 4 dtl7000's.
I am sending the full backups off site - how do I keep track of whats on
what tape with out having to look in the report manager and look at images
on media? I know what tapes get written but I don't know if the data is a
from a full or incremental backup. Is there an easy way to do this?

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Pass job ID to script?

Backup gurus:

I'd like it if bpstart_notify and its friends could include the Job ID
number in the information it sends me. I know this is not one of the
parameters that gets passed to the script. How could I get NetBackup to
automatically tell me the Job ID of a backup job it's kicking off?

Thanks!

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NIS+ and User backups

Hello all,

I am seeing an error message whenever I submit a User backup. I believe it
is related to NIS+ being setup recently.
The backup fails with Status Code 11 : System CallFailed
The following error message is seen in the logs:

mpx_setup_shm: could not getpwnam() for user dallen

Backups which run under root or oracle work fine, but those userid's are
not defined to NIS+.
Netbackup is 3.4.  O/S is HPUX 11.

Does anyone have a soution for this problem?

Thanks
Dean

Hi all

I am trying to get Netbackup to use secure ftp (sftp) to install clients.
When I run sftp from inside a script, I get the following:
Warning: tcgetattr failed in ssh_rl_set_tty_mode: Inappropriate ioctl for
device

Any ideas.

Thanks in Advance.

 I just tried out the reporting script backup_report.pl and ran into some
 problems. Basically the Gbytes reported was incorrect and the summarys
 weren't printing as expected. I had jobs backing up ~ 30 Mbytes that were
 reporting 3+ Gbytes.

 I thought I would pass along the changes I made to get this working as
 expected in case anyone is interested.

 Code changes:

 After the following comment, add the next to lines, (approx line 38)

 ############
 # Grab any flags or switches that
 # may have been passed from the
 # command line
 ############
 $omit_fulls = 0;
 $omit_incs = 0;

 Change the line that begins with (approximately line 230),

      if ($type =~ /Full/) {
 to
      if ($type =~ /full/i) {

 change (approx line 240)

      elsif ($type =~ /Incremental/) {
 to
      elsif ($type =~ /incr/i) {

 To fix the total Gbytes field, make the following changes, (approx line
366)

     $end= $jobs_hash{$job}[5];
     $gbytes= $jobs_hash{$job}[4];
     $gbytes= sprintf ("%6.4f", $gbytes);               # <- add this line
     $elapsed= $jobs_hash{$job}[6];

 That should take care of if. If you don't want a 20 digit Gbyte value
under
 the summary, you could probably also add a similiar sprintf statement for
the
 $total_full_gb and $total_inc_gb variables prior to the print statements.

 Cheers.

Has anyone ever seen this happen?

During last night's backups, I started seeing errors like this:

07/03/2001 01:24:58 k410ts k410ts  media id 000016 is in a DOWN drive,
                    misplaced, write protected or unmountable;

07/03/2001 01:25:00 k410ts k410ts  media id 000017 is in a DOWN drive,
                    misplaced, write protected or unmountable;
                          attempting retry with a different media id
And so on, up to media id 000025.

I have an ADIC Scalar 100 which has 30 slots. 25 of them have tapes, with
media ids 000001-000025. The front-panel interface on the Scalar 100 still
tells me it has 25 full slots and 5 empty ones, which is correct. But
NetBackup has decided that the device only has 15 slots...

I ran "robtest" and it thinks there are only 15 slots. I can't access
anything in slot 16 or above.

What could have happened? I didn't see anything in Veritas' Support
Knowledge Base.  I'm running HP-UX 11.00 (HP9000/800), NetBackup 3.4GA.  Any
help would be most welcome.

Thanks!

Were you always able to access these other slots?

Sometimes the library manufacturers (STK does this with their timberwolf)
will sell a 15 slot version of their 30 slot library by simply configuring
the library with limiting firmware and / or hardware. If you were able to
see these slots before, then I would get in touch with your hardware folks
first. I wouldn't suspect software right away.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] RE: [Veritas-vx] Help with Veritas products?

So there are a couple of features that are all add-on licenses to vxfs even
though the functionality is there by default.

1) Checkpoints are done on a filesystem basis. A common use of this feature
is putting a DB in backup mode, then taking a checkpoint which is pretty
quick ( 1 - 2 seconds ), then taking the DB out of backup mode.

The checkpoint really just creates a block map of the filesystem, then any
subsequent writes to that filesystem occur as normal, but then a
copy-on-write operation occurs to another area on the disk. pointers are
established and maintained in the block map to the old data in case a roll
back occurs.

Multiple checkpoints can be done for point and time recovery to different
exact times.

The cool part is that you avoid a full atomic copy of the file system and
only the changed blocks are copied which usually amounts to a very small
percentage of total disk space over a short period of time.

2)
Leveraging this technology, Storage Edition for Oracle offers block-level
incremental backups and storage rollbacks to protect mission critical
database data....
------snip-----

BLIB - block-level incremental backups

I think this feature actually became available before checkpoints.

It allows you to backup change blocks only in a file and provides the
glue/api for Netbackup to do it. Therefore it requires VxFS and Netbackup.

Hope that helped,

I was reading some literature that said that with Storage Checkpoint, that
a DBA can do rollbacks and rollforwards... What the heck is storage
checkpoint? Is it another VM or VxFS feature, or is it a seperate
product. Also, can someone explain this too me? It's an excerpt from the
Veritas product literature....

Leveraging this technology, Storage Edition for Oracle offers block-level
incremental backups and storage rollbacks to protect mission critical
database data....

Is this an add on to the NetBackup product, or does it leverage existing
features of VxVM or VxFS?

So how is this different that snapshots? Why do you have to license it
seperately if you could do this with VxFS natively? Is there something
obvious that I'm missing?

So this is a seperate license for NetBackup or for VxFS? How do you
implement such a thing? Does it require use of a bpstart_notify script, or
is there an agent that Veritas Provides?

Snapshots require a separate container for storage; checkpoints live in
the same device as the parent.

Snapshots are read-only; checkpoints can be read-only or read-write.

Snapshots are transient; checkpoints are persistent.

Snapshots are disposed of at unmount; checkpoints can be committed or
rolled back to, so any of the branches can be the new "main" data.

Snapshots are one-level -- though more than one can be in effect at a
time, all are based on a single parent for the file system; checkpoints
can have other checkpoints as parents.
