Try to find out what the block size you used for the backup.
Assuming that the backup was done using
 1) no compression
 2) no multiplexing
 3) not a raw partition
 4) not a NDMP client image
 5) not encrypted
.....
then,
specifying a block size of 2 times the backup block size
will help.
Please refer to page 610 of admin guide

Is this an MPX image that you are trying to restore 
with GNU tar?

When you Multiplex, you lose the tar compatible 
header.  the images however, can be de-multiplexed by 
using bpduplicate to duplicate those images to another 
piece of media.
