tpreq -ev <media id> -a w -d <drive type> -p <pool> -f <file name>
(p234 - 236 of the Media Manager SAG)
to unmount the tape:
tpunmount -f <filename>
You can then write to it for example with tar:
tar -cvf /tmp/mountedtape /all/my/stuff
You could then check it with tar. Make sure that this pool is not used for
regular backups or HSM.

large amount of info that we need to send off to a vendor and being able to
write to a tape and send the tape off is an ideal solution.
