Kathy,

There is an excellent explanation on pgaes 170-176 in the
Netbackup system administrator manual. I've enabled
multiplexing for some of the classes and the good news
is it works as advertised. Here's what you take into
consideration

No. of clients in a class,
No. of drives,
MPX factor per class
MPX factor per drive

I my case, I have 10 drives on a STK-9710, and in my class
I have 10 clients, if MPX factor is set to 8, potentially
80 jobs will start, if your MPX factor per drive is set to
16, then only 5 drives will be utilized and the remaining
5 will not be used. If you have several classes starting
backup at the same time (which is what happens in my case),
I do see all the drives at full blast and more than 100-160
MPX threads running at once.

I really didnt find a good mathematical approach to maximizing
the MPX utilization. I love to hear from anyone who narrowed
it down to science. But carefully enabling MPX for certain
classes, has its benefits.
