Is this Oracle 8.0.5?  I had this problem, and I believe the solution
was that the bp.conf file on the client needed to have
REQUIRED_INTERFACE = (hostname).  I understand RMAN can get picky about
going through the 'correct' interface.  Make the REQUIRED_INTERFACE
equal the hostname of the backup server on the same network as it.  Give
this a try and see if this helps.
