Hi,

We have this problem every now and then with an STK 9710 robot that has
4 DLT 7000 drives.

There is a problem documented by Storage Tek with a certain series of
tapes that caused this problem on their robots (the black number on the
back side of the tape starts with SH910M...). It caused the tape to be
stuck in the drive, which is not what it sounds happens in your case.

We have occasionally drives go down with AND without the tape not going
back to its slot, and the only (temporary) solutions we had so far were
replacing drives and/or upgrading microcodes.
