Yes you need to (should) have all the drives defined in the media and device
manager and then less in the Storage Unit Manager.

Does this mean you have more drives defined in "Media and Device Manager"
than "Storage Unit Manager"? strange concept, but if it works.......

You are correct! If your storage unit is set up with one less drive (i.e. 4
out of a possible five in the TLU) then it will use the extra drive
dynamically for restores.

Note: All drives not allocated to a SU are considered restore drives.

We allocate 1 for every 6 drives for restores.

Be careful if you are sharing a TLU between multiple SU's. The sum of the
drives allocated to SU's must be less then the amount of drives in the TLU.
This gets trick with the SSO option.

I was told that creating the SU was not necessary and that the restore
would automatically use the extra drive, true?

Make the storage unit so that it owns one less drive.

Then create a STU with one drive attached to the same library.

Does anyone have protocols/procedures to remove a drive from a storage unit
so that it is dedicated for restores only??

We are running NBU 3.2 on an SunE450 with a StorageTek library, with robotic
arm.

Thanks
