I am upgrading one of my masters today...
This is what I did:
1) recreate my environment in our backup lab. Same OS levels, same (or as
close as possible) hardware, small robotic tape library (9730 -- very close to
our production 9710's), same NBU 3.1.1 + patch level.
2) run backups in the backup lab for a few weeks.
3) upgrade the backup lab
4) test backups/restores
5) take the latest master db backup tape & restore in the backup lab. diff -r
the /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database dirs in restored
directories and production dirs.
6) read the release notes & latest patch notes (363). Check robotic firmware,
etc.
7) inspect the bin dirs on the master, make notes of recently changed files
(even stuff like jobid), copy those and any customized files to the side (like
.xbpmonrc, job.conf...)
8) get the latest db backup tape in hand... just in case
9) tar /usr/openv to tape... just in case...
10) finally... upgrade following the steps in the book...
I am on step 9. I'll follow-up later, assuming all goes well and I still have
a job :-).
