Paul,

the index size by itself is not the issue. However, there are automatic and 
manual methods to shrink it.
NW will check for expired save sets at least once a day automatically. This is 
usually enough.
Shrinking the browse policy would be the recommended and best action ... if you 
are allowed to do that ;-)

Another alternative is to move off the indexes to a new disk/directory. As they 
are organized by client name ... 
  - ensure that no backups are run for this client
  - copy the whole path to a new location
  - set the appropriate attribute (index path) for the client resource 
  - verify that NW can see the new CFI (by running nsrls, nsrinfo, recover)
  - run a full index backup of this client or wait until the next full will be 
run
  - delete the old CFI directory
