Savegrp -pnv -G "GROUPNAME" -c CLIENTNAME
At least in the past, savegrp -p did a probe (so no real backup) *but*
it would run the pre- and post-backup commands configured for the client,
so if you have scripts that e.g. cause a database to be shut down, they
would be run.
In other words, savegrp -p isn't always safe to run.
Has that behavior changed?
Add -pnv to the savegrp command Martin suggested :
it will not start the backup but print, in verbose mode,
probe info and the pool(s) to be used by the backup
