I suspect that the indexes are less sensitive to performance issues because accessing them is part of the backup, clone, stage or restore operations so it is less likely that you will even notice that. Naturally, placing /nsr/index on the same array as an AFTD when you try to squeeze well over 500MBps from it will have its impact. The rest of the /nsr directory (/nsr/res, /nsr/tmp and /nsr/mm) seems more critical. I once even considered moving /nsr/tmp and /nsr/res/jobsdb to /tmp (which on Solaris sits in the memory/swap) and placing them on SSD also makes much sense. The reason I didn't do that was because my NDMP backups created a 5Gb file in /nsr/tmp and I was afraid it will put too much pressure on other processes.

As a side note, I don't really see how you will be able to feed 4 LTO5 drives. You didn't say which hardware and OS you will be using, but keep in mind that LTO5 is 140MBps native (the 2009 draft suggested 180MBps) which means you will be trying to push ~500MBps from your array and server. This will require you to optimize your setup or even replace or add hardware.

Actually, it is the other way. /nsr holds critical directories which will
suffer if they are to be on the same array with an AFTD. On July 2009 I sent
the following to the list (this was with 7.4.4, but I think this holds true
for later versions as well):

Were there any ill effects to indexes remaining on the SAN? I would
imagine Browsing large savesets and selecting files?
