I've never had any problem doing the uninstall/re-install either. However, 
being paranoid, after I shut down legato, I always tar the /nsr directory to 
another location just in case, then do the uninstall, re-install.

Are you re-installing the OS, or just installing a new version of NW?  When you 
uninstall NW,
it doesn't delete the /nsr directory, so all the history remains.   I've never 
had a problem
with uninstalling the previous version of NW and then installing the new 
version.  In July, I
upgraded from 7.5.4 to 7.6.2 (on 64-bit Linux) by uninstalling the older 
version and installing
the newer version.
