Hi Stan,

have you tried using dd to create the image? 

You may be able to convert it using quemu and run it as a VM (I don;t expect 
it to use SCSI drives etc but may be good for mminfo queries).

The dd image can be written back to a disk with a similar partition and with 
enough space for the dd image. It doesn't have to be indentical or with the 
same size, but it should have a very similar partition structure (so you can 
allocate  sda1 back on a new  /dev/sda1, sda2 on sda2, etc  ) 

I assume you have good reasons not to use the traditional and well tested 
mmrecover.
