A question here about volume default capacity.

Under NMC, I don't have a value listed for the 'Volume default capacity' field under the Configuration properties tab for any of the tape devices. These are all LTO-4 tape drives.

I notice, however, that if I mount a volume, regardless of whether or not it's full, the 'Volume current capacity' field is 800 GB under the Volume properties tab for the affected device. Where is NW picking this value up from?

I know that the native capacity for LTO-4 is 800 GB. Is that what it's assuming and just defaulting to that?

Some time back, we had an older LTO-3 tape library. Back when we were using LTO-3 drives, I listed '800 GB' as the default capacity for those devices, assuming a 2:1 compression ratio. Since LTO-3 is 400 GB native, this made sense to me. So, I can see where NW would have picked it up from back when we were using that library. Also, this would affect the '%used' value reported by 'mminfo', which I realize is essentially aesthetics. But that was then and this is now, and I decided not to bother with that field under our newer installation: a different version of NW, different tape library, different server - a whole different install.

But without this field set to, say, 1600 GB, assuming a 2:1 compression ratio, then I guess most of our tapes probably report 100% used for quite some time, after reaching their native capacity.

Thanks.

George
