I have a meeting tomorrow with my Networker DSE and will show him this
email. My Linux guy also says this is coming from Networker as it is not
handling bad drives very well when it puts them in service mode.

Hi Jee,

Sadly, it has everything to do with NetWorker these days. Starting with
7.5 NetWorker now records the serial numbers from the drives in the
jukebox and if it finds a mismatch (as it will after you physically
replace a drive that has worn out), it refuses to use that drive.

You have to perform a scan for new devices from the NMC on the system
that sees the robotics of the jukebox and then wait about 5 minutes for
NetWorker to figure out that the serial number of the drive has changed.

Is this a Linux-only bug? I've replaced two drives since we upgraded from 7.2 to 7.5.1 and haven't encountered this, but it's been on Solaris 9 / SPARC.
When we replaced tape drive (scsi) at Solaris 10, system have only 2 drives. We should create devices again to Solaris with reconfigure boot if we want device numbers start from zero. Where devices swapped /dev/rmt/0cbn and 1cbn. Then we create jukebox again to Networker with NMC gui if you only add new tape drive you can scan and add/delete drive with NMC gui. There is a command jbedit which can add and delete components. I belive this is cmd line alternative for NMC. Its recommed use same jukebox names and etc, but this service personnel don't used jbedit for this, because this is command is introduced for version 7.1 at first time. jbconfig isn't recommed for newer Networker versions.

Networker used own configuration data for devices, if devices changes you must tell this to Networker. Networker can't detect example Linux udev device changes. Look esg66496 Howto create device files san/scsi and esg63951 for jbedit/jbconfig howto add/delete devices at Networker.
