I have the same behavior after upgrade from NSR741 to 753,
from W2K 32b to 2008R2 64b and setting up tape drive
persistence naming (using regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Tape and create a 
new dword key called "Persistence" with value 1 and reboot)
with Qlogic 4Gb FC HBA.

We've recently upgraded to 7.5.3 (from 7.4.4 under W2K8 x64) and we've 
seen that the 'tapes' command is not reporting our drives as usual. The 
output is like this:
