The short answer is yes, an LTO-3 tape written in an LTO-4 drive can
then be read on an LTO-3 drive. I have to admit I've never done that
myself with LTO-3 and LTO-4, but I have done it with LTO-2 and LTO-3 and
it has worked without any problems.

I understand the backward compatibility of the LTO products. My
question is this: If I write to LTO3 media with an LTO4 drive, can I
then take that media and read it in an LTO3 drive? I understand the
read and write one generation back and read two generations back but the
way it is worded leaves me to believe that the drive would need to be
the same or newer. Or, does the LTO 4 drive detect the fact that the
tape medium is LTO 3 and write it in an LTO 3 readable format (density,
speed, etc)?
