You can certainly invoke a group to start from the command line (or a script) a 
la:

savegrp -s {Networker Server Name} -l {backup level} -c {client} -G {group name}

This way Networker will be aware of the backup, keep a normal set of indexes 
etc, as opposed to running just a "save" command.

What are you trying to accomplish/avoid by running it from the client instead 
of a normal scheduled job?
