I have been able to do this process (re-scan old tapes with "scanner -i"; 
change browse and retention time) to 8 other tapes now. The fact that it's 
not working on this ssid is (I think) almost certainly due to the fact 
that it's apparently marked as "incomplete".

At this point, I am just moving on. What I needed is almost certainly not 
on that saveset, anyway; I was just trying to be thorough.
