Yes, it is sufficient and redundant. If you are going to go to the trouble of setting up WSB and monitoring it to verify it is working on every single one of your W2K8 systems, why are you bothering to duplicate that effort with NetWorker? Please don't say it is for the incremental file recovery option. You can do individual file recovery with WSB too.

Supposedly all of the backup vendors were caught off-guard by Microsoft's announcement last October that live system restore was not supported (was in fact never supported). However, other backup vendors have solutions out the door already. It's only EMC that is saying they won't have a solution (aside from setting up WSB via savepnpc) until Summer 2010!

It's disgraceful!

On top of this, the current EMC client does not work if you need to do a
bare metal restore. What a mess....

This is not entirely true.

Microsoft has something called 'Microsoft Windows Recovery Environment'
for 'bare metal restore', and you can use this with NetWorker.

It is sufficient to install WSB (Windows Server Backup) and do a backup to disk
(to a locally attached disk) with save set BMR (which selects the system state
and the drives).

You obtain images of your operating system under, e.g.,

E:\WindowsImageBackup

where this directory is the place where you store your images with WSB.

It is thus sufficient to do a differential/incremental backup of that directory with NetWorker.

Make sure E:\WindowsImageBackup is in your NetWorker backup.

Next, you should be able to do a 'bare metal restore' by going to the
Windows Recovery Environment, 'F8 Repair your computer' during booting
from install CD, and then select Ŕestore your computer using a system image
that you created earlier'.
