Re: [Networker] DR enabled backup of Windows Server 2008

An image of the entire drive c is a requirement
Please see MS article below
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694
This has the following text
"System State Recovery after a new installation of Windows Server 2008 on new
hardware or same hardware This kind of recovery is not supported.
Windows Server Backup does not block recovery on a newly-installed operating
system. Instead, it warns that this operation is not supported. This feature is
used only as a last-ditch support effort to reclaim data from a failed server
and is not a supported backup feature
System State Recover is only supported on the same operating system instance.
It is not supported on a reinstalled operating system on the same or different
hardware"

For the short term we created a share on our NetApp NAS box and have setup
windows backup to run every Friday in the early evening. We do a full backup of
the Netapp on Friday nights. We are also running the regular Legato client on
the 2008 machines so that individual files are backed up. Hopefully this will
get us along until March.

Hi folks,
I'm working on this issue with Server 2008, that it's not possible to do DR
restore with NetWorker alone. EMC is now recommending to use the Windows
Server Backup utility to create an image of drive C: to be used in DR
purposes.
How are you solving this? Are you using the savepnpc method described in
the NetWorker procedure generator? I find it almost unusable because it
will create an image of the entire drive C:
Does anyone here know if it's enough to only have the systemstate backup?
It can be created with this command:
wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:<path>
I would be very interested in knowing how other organizations are solving
this and how it's working.
Joey
