But indexes on seperate tapes wastes a lot of tapes. Indexes are tiny so I 
ended up sending mostly empty tapes offsite.

That's the way we've always done it, but you have to have the index
files/tapes to do that.   Some people don't keep the indexes that long. 

One thing we learned from Katrina, keep your indexes on separate tapes,
and keep them forever.   Legato is smart enough to recognize that if you
don't have the data tapes any more, past the time of tapes that you
have, it won't restore the index entries.  Hope that makes sense.   For
example if you tried to restore an index all the way back to September
of 2005, but your tapes only go back to January 2006, then it won't
restore those index entries.   At least, that's how it has worked in our
experience, and boy do we have a lot of experience.  We still do
restores from August 2005 (right before Katrina).

Thanks. The savesets are from last september and were probably 7.4 at
that time.
