Hi All,

We would like to backup to an AFTD and also copy the savesets to
physical tape for offsite storage.

The idea would be to keep recent savesets on the AFTD as long as
possible, so that most restores are from disk.

However we also need to generate offsite tape copies immediately after
the backups to minimize RPO in the case of a total loss of the
production site.

This seems to pose problems :-

1) Using staging, with high and low watermarks.

The problem here is that the staging only starts when you reach the high
watermark on the AFTD. Then the savesets are staged to tape in a
defined order (say oldest first) until you reach the low watermark.
This means that after a staging run, almost all restores will have to be
from tape, because most of the savesets will have been purged off AFTD.
Likewise, if you have a total site loss just before the high-watermark
is reached, all the important savesets would have been on the AFTD and
would be lost. Your only option would be to recover off old savesets on
tape.

2) Using staging via scrpts.

This has similar problems, in that the saveset is either on the AFTD or
on tape but not both. One needs the offsite tape copy immediately for
governance, but one also need to retain an onsite AFTD for as long as
possible, to enjoy quick restores. Simple staging does not support
this.

3) Using cloning, with saveset selection scripts.

This works better, and can be designed to get offsite copies onto tape
almost immediately after the backup completes. The difficulty here is
how to groom away (purge) the older savesets off the AFTD when required.
This should leave enough space for the next backup, but also keep as
many recent savesets as possible on the AFTD to avoid having to send for
offsite tapes when a restore is needed.

Questions

1) Since writing the above, I have read posts from several people
who are doing exactly what I need. It seems that there are several ways
to purge away the older savesets from the AFTD. If anyone has the time
to be specific about how they do this and why, I would really appreciate
it. We do not have great scripting skills in house but can make do by
modifying scripts created by the scripting boffins. (Windows platform)

Regards,
