Hey Olafur,
Normally your savegroup completion report will give you an indication as to why
an incremental backup has been promoted to full, but some of the reasons could
be:
1. The database recovery mode is set to simple, it needs to be set to full to
be able to perform incremental backups (sorry might have the terminology wrong
as they are MS SQL settings)
2. Some other process has performed a backup of the database (SQL maintenance)
3. Some databases can't be backed up using an incremental (e.g. MSDB and the
Master database)
