Thanks for the suggestions. We are already running drive firmware 85V1 but will 
consider more restrictive LUN masking on the library. 

Having had 5 drives replaced, we have experienced no more HW error 31, media 
error 3 or "immediate clean required" messages. Maybe we really did have a 
faulty batch of drives, touch wood. I'll continue to monitor over the coming 
week.
