Kurian, you failed to provide your environment - OS, NW version.

Try to run:
savegrp -pvc <CLIENT_NAME> -G <GROUP_NAME> 
and tell us what's happening.  If you run NW7.4 (not sure about earlier) - 
you'd get a filename with more details on why your job is failing.  
To me your problem is most likely in network connectivity, DNS (reverse zone 
resolution is very important on both sides) or /nsr/res/server having incorrect 
NW server name.  Make sure this file is empty.
