Hi Rick et al,

I thought it would be useful to put my two cents in about why some folks on this list have commented so positively about our courses.

The main difference in our training is that we have written "Hands-on" classes. These are 90% hands-on, and 10% lecture, whereas most training classes are aimed to be 70% lecture and 30% lab. We designed our course to be 90/10 (hands-on/lecture), since we found that most people learn so much better via hands-on better than lecture. We also have experienced field engineers teach the class, so they bring real-world, current, experience to the class.

This is not to say anything bad about the EMC course developers, and training group (nor about your course--I didn't realize you had left EMC Training until I just saw your email!). As you note, many of the EMC training folks have worked with NetWorker for years. The main complaint I've personally heard regards the design of most training courses, where it is mostly lecture; those that have commented to me about that type of course invariably say "I don't remember things unless I *do* them...I wish the course had more lab, and that the labs were better designed."

Joe,

I'm kinda curious where you got your information that EMC's NetWorker
training is so poor?? Having worked for EMC Education from 2003-2006, I
saw the student evaluations for all classes taught by EMC each week. On
a 5 point scale, the overall score for NetWorker classes taught in North
America and the U.K. were consistently in the 4.7 - 4.9 range. In other
words, 94-98% of the students felt that the class was excellent overall.

To the best of my knowledge right now, EMC has one NetWorker trainer in
Canada, three in the U.S (one is a contractor/former EMC employee) and
one in the U.K (contractor/former EMC employee). All of them have at
least 10 years of NetWorker experience and are excellent trainers. I
believe they all also had some sys admin experience prior to getting
into training.

Having said that, there are other sources of NetWorker training in the
U.S and U.K besides EMC and Cambridge Computers. You can find a list of
companies in the FAQ of the Backup Central web-site.
