Unrelated - Why does NetWorker backup the client file indexes when the scanner
command can recover this information?
There is an enormous and significant difference between recovering a
backed up index using nsrck -L7 and using the scanner command.
Running nsrck -L7 recovers ALL contents of that client's index at the
time it was backed up and merges this data into the current index on
disk. Bear in mind that this index could contain data from hundreds of
tapes going back many years. To perform the same function using scanner
could take you weeks, and is (as others have pointed out) a last resort.
Also the scanner command is a utility that is on the periphery of
NetWorker functionality. To use it you need to manually load a volume
into a drive and NetWorker has no real knowledge of the tape's presence
in a drive. I usually take the precaution of putting the drive into
service mode when running scanner commands to prevent NetWorker trying
to load tapes into the drive for backups. You wouldn't want to do this
for hundreds of tapes.
