That results in a big change in how the backup works... 

Without -M the backup data goes to a device locally attached to a NDMP
client.

With -M the backup data is streamed from the NDMP client to a
storagenode via the network and then on to the devices attached to the
storagenode.

If one particular client failed to work you should compare it's client
record with the other clients, the storagenode attribute may not have
valid hosts in it, or maybe there's no network path between the client
and the selected storagenode.

If you want the option of switching between methods you can setup
storagenodes with multiple names, put the client's name first, then the
storagenode(s) next.
