On some Unix systems it's the "device" you select that determines if
hardware compression is used or not. We switched from Solaris over to
Windows about 6 years ago (not my idea) so the details are a bit fuzzy
but for instance the basic tape drive is "/dev/rmt/0". Then to modify
the behavior you append letters to that name. The letters I see (from a
quick Google search) are l (low density), m (medium), h (high), u
(ultra), c (compressed), & n (no rewind). So when I was running
Networker on Solaris I used the "/dev/rmt/0cbn" device for compression
and no rewind (the "b" had something to do with the drive acting like a
Berkley rather than System V device I think). I don't know if any of
that applies to HP systems but it might give you a clue about what to
look for.

So I would have thought. However, I see no such option with the "HP
Library and Tape Tools" does not seem to provide such an option, that I
can see.

I'd prefer hardware compression; however, at this point, I'll take what
I
can get. :-)
