Someone hasn't by any chance turned compression on a particular folder
or the file system (in windows 2k3 folders and files that have been
compressed appear blue - you turn this on or off by going into the
properties of a file / folder, on the general tab click advanced, and
select or deselect the compress option) its not a great idea to have it
turned on ... and if it is I imagine that your box would be getting
flogged during backups

Anyway if you have it turned on, and you look at the properties of the
drive it reports the used capacity of the drive and not the sum total of
all the files (apposed to if you select all the files / folders on the
drive it will give you two bits of information the total size of the
files and their size on disk)

Peter,

I had a look at nsrinfo on one client with this problem but the sizes
(NSR size
and file size) do not differ greatly, although the NSR size is slightly
more
which may account for 'negative' compression. It does not make up for
the fact
that the total size is more than 100GB larger than the actual amount of
data
(70GB used on a 100GB volume). Also, for the record, we don't encounter
this
problem every day, just randomly, but fairly often. Maybe every 5-7
days. And
this happens during incremental or full backups.
