Yes, mounting the share to a server is the only way, but it has issues
such as performance, permissions and acl restores.

Why are you trying to avoid NDMP? License cost? If you don't want to
hang drivers off the NAS server or share them via DDS, then you can use
DSA to backup via NDMP over the network.

available to backup an NFS or CIFS share presented to the network by a
NAS device (objective is to avoid use of NDMP)?
