Lets take a step back.

We are running 7.4/7.4.1 successfully in a rather larger implementation. We have had stability issues with the software, but up until our batched UPGRADE things have gone fairly smooth. Our problems have been more related to hardware failure then bad software. In comparison to other solutions on the market, we are very happy with the results. Our backups run. the tapes have data on them. We are able to pass certifications with a 100% success record. The latest features in 7.4x are really needed. They should have been implemented long ago.

That being said...

The installation routines have little to no error checking, so if something goes wrong with you update, you won't find out until you actually run the software. This can be mitigated through procedures and error checking. This just means that your techs won't be doing your patches for you.

The java issues need to be fixed. Networker NEEDS to support the latest VMs... not ones from 4 years ago. It's getting harder and harder to maintain old buggy environments just so I can run the management console.

We have had ongoing stability issues, and when we went to 7.4.1 to
try
and resolve them, the system would not even initialize. Support was
able to go through and clean up our install, but they were still not
comfortable with the new release. They have only just begun to dig
through it.

Because of our issues, they felt, as do we, that it made sense to
limit the variables.

Since the reinstall, our problems have been eliminated.

Ok. I am fairly new to networker with a fresh 7.4 install that seems to be running fairly well overall, and from lurking on this list-serv, and my ongoing (small, yet annoying) issues with "Support" on this version,
I get the impression people are avoiding 7.4 altogether like a plague.

Are you essentially saying that EMC actually released a new
version/update that does not even work, or rather they could not even
get to work/upgrade themselves? That is utterly crazy and sad!?

Any other thoughts from anyone out there running 7.4 on win32? We are
finding bugs that are so simple and ridiculous (and some have been told
are patched, but yet are still not with hotfixes?) , that we are often
feeling like we are the only site on earth even running this thing?

Jamie
