start the nwrecover with strace and look at the output

someting like

strace -o nwrecover.out -f nwrecover

would produce a system call trace in the file: nwrecover.out

so you can inspect where things fail

also try the cli version

recover and see if that works fine (it culd be the gui part that is the
problem)
