There are two possibilities:
(1) There may be newer save sets of a lower level which depend on these
save sets.
(2) nsrim may not have yet been run to mark the save sets and volume as
recyclable. This runs periodically but you can also run it manually if
you like.
When you refer to save sets of a lower level, do you mean clones? If so, and
the clone has a retention period that is much longer than the original save
set, then would the only way to reuse the tape be to manually recycle it?
No I don't mean clones. I am talking about full/numbered
levels/incremental backups. An incremental backup or a level backup will
always depend on a full backup, and optionally also on other levels in
between. A full backup cannot expire until all later lower level backups
of that save set have also expired.
