I would suggest that what you describe is not shared. First, you would
have to size each LUN appropriately for each server. Some LUNs will
always be too big, and some LUNs will always be too small. In addition,
you can't have storage node A back up to disk slice A, then have storage
node B clone storage node A's backups, cause it can't see them. If you
could, that would be sharing.

I like analogies. Sharing is two families living in the same house.
They share resources (heating, kitchen, bathroom, living room, laundry
room). What you describe is more like a duplex. The land and building
has been subdivided so that they can live close together; the two
families actually share nothing. (OK, they share the common wall
between them.)

Ok, a specific LUN cannot be shared, but you can create two different
LUNs and assign them to two different servers. So, you can share the
pool of space between two different servers.

OO>And why is handling RAID volumes a high cost?

It's the difficulty in creating MULTIPLE RAID volumes, deciding how big
each of them should be, and assigning them to servers. You will always
have LUNs that are too big and/or too small, creating waste and
management issues, respectively. You also (today) can't share those
volumes between multiple backup servers. A VTL can be shared between
multiple servers.
